Julia’s Goals in Tutoring
My goal is to make Tutoring fun and safe, so the student is accessible to learning and wants to be successful. Working one on one, I try and accomplish a number of things: We usually start a session doing homework to see the student’s process, proficiency and efficiency, especially at the beginning of the relationship. It’s important to learn their basic skills, problem solving abilities, how the student reacts when they don’t know things, ability to persevere, stay focused, ask for help, and use their resources. I work hard to provide a safe and playful environment for learning. It is very important to me that teens learn to ask for help.
My hope is that it starts with me, and we expand that bubble to teachers and other appropriate adults they have in their lives for support, parents too. I work with students on these skills and strategies, plan meetings, how to approach, what to say, subject matter and agenda, and role play. I teach teens that teachers are a learning tool for them to utilize. I consider this an important life skill. I do not want to create a relationship where the student is solely dependent on me for support, I want to be one of their team of resources.
